Elizabeth

I have a confession.

liztwo

I haven’t actually watched a lot of Elizabeth Taylor’s movies.  I’ve seen “National Velvet”, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” (amazing performance), “Cat On a Hot Tin Roof”, “Father of the Bride” and “Father’s Little Dividend”, and the 1943 “Jane Eyre” where she plays Helen.  That’s not a lot of her films, when you consider her life’s work.

lizeight

However, Elizabeth Taylor was always known to me.  How, I’m not sure.  Maybe it was being a child of the 80s–she was always seen in pictures with those childhood favorites of mine (Michael Jackson, Madonna, etc).  She was just always there.

lizsix

And I could never take my eyes off of her.

lizseven

Love her, hate her, think she’s a genius, or a crazy person, you can’t deny–she has your attention when she’s on screen.

oTTo_Watson

It’s not just that she is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen.  It’s not just those eyes (those eyes!).

lizten

She has that certain something.  That something you can’t put into words, you can’t put your finger on.  You just know it when you see it.

lizone

She always seemed like a good soul to me.  She seemed to truly love and care for those around her, and to truly want to make a difference.

move. I don’t like the way I act. I mean, period. So, you know, I don’t like
myself.”

TnT Tuesday

Today I’m sharing one of my favorite tunic dresses from my shop.

207t

I had *just* enough of this fabric to make this one dress.

I’d purchased the fabric eons ago as a remnant and could never quite figure out what to do with it.

188t

Then, I was preparing for my runway show a few months ago.  I had hit that place, that place where I’d completely lost my vision and couldn’t figure out WHAT I was doing.

I started scrambling about, making random boho-style things, because that was the style I was really feeling at the time.

181t

And, out popped this beauty.  I originally intended to include this in the show itself.  But that was in the haze of doubt and confusion.

As much as I love the tunic, it didn’t belong in THAT show.  And, so, it wasn’t included.

I’m a layering kind of girl, so I love it layered with a tank top, and over jeans.

Don’t get me wrong–it’s cute alone, too.

Friday Favorite

I thought I’d share a favorite find of mine on Friday’s.  A mini celebration in honor of the weekend.

My first favorite find is a pair of earrings that I ordered on etsy almost FIVE (!!!) years ago.  Oh my gosh, has it really been that long?  Wow.  Time flies.

Anyway, I give you the sea anemone earrings:

earrings

I wear these earrings almost every day–they are totally my go-to pair for my first holes (I have multiple ear piercings) and I just love them so much!  I am constantly getting compliments on them, and have sent many a person to the etsy shop I purchased them from.  I hope that translated into some sales for her, because her shop is so, so, so wonderful!

It looks like she still makes a sea anemone earring, though has changed the look a bit.  Still wonderful, though!  You can find them here:  https://www.etsy.com/listing/73494291/sea-anemone-sterling-silver-earrings?ref=shop_home_active

Heck, just go check out her shop, Kira Ferrer Jewelry Design here:  https://www.etsy.com/shop/KiraFerrer

Those stackable rings are calling my name…..and the turquoise statement ring?  YES PLEASE.

This Week

What I’ve been working on this week:

003

A full Kahlan, Mother Confessor replica.  This includes the full overdress (done), a long skirt (done) and a custom bustier (in progress).

008

018

First time through for the bustier–I’ve draped the pattern, altered it, and am now sewing it up.  I’m working with a faux leather (yes, I know, but it sure does keep the cost down, and until I have an actual LEATHER MACHINE, I’ll be working in pleather) and cotton twill.  I’m excited for the end product–just have to remember to keep good notes, as I do plan to offer this in the shop after this project is complete.

025

020

Beginnings of a bustier and ruffle bloomer look for a burlesque number.

013

Which meant a trial run for some boy shorts–these will be altered, but I kind of love this cut and am thinking of offering these in the shop soon, too.  Just need to do a fitting on a model first.

010

Shipping completed items out every couple of days.

026

And getting a package returned to me from the post office.  Apparently the large envelopes I’ve been using for over 2 years as a flat rate are NOT ACTUALLY FLAT RATE.  But, somehow, no one ever picked up on this.  *sigh*  So, until I get myself a postal scale, I’ll be taking the long way round and bringing all my packages to the post office, paying there, and coming home to note down how much certain things weigh so that the NEXT TIME I can just prepay.

Myrna

Myrna Loy 1934

I first saw Myrna Loy in “The Thin Man” (and if you haven’t seen that movie, you simply MUST–I’d have to say it’s my favorite movie of all time) and I was smitten from the moment she walked on screen.

myrnanine

You can’t take your eyes off of her when she’s on the screen.

myrnathree

Those eyebrows!  Those eyes!

myrnafive

For me, she is one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.

myrnasix

And she’s funny.  Comedy is, in my opionion, the hardest thing to play on screen or on stage (and, believe me, I’ve attempted it–and failed miserably).  You either have it, or you don’t.

thinfive

Watching just the first 5 minutes of her on screen in “The Thin Man”, and you KNOW she has it.

myrnaeight

Just a beautiful woman, and from what I’ve read about her, that extended to her personality as well.

myrnaseven

So, go watch a Myrna Loy movie or two–trust me, it’s so totally worth it.

myrnafour

“I was glamorous because of magicians like George J. Folsey, James Wong Howe, Oliver Marsh, Ray June, and all those other great cinematographers. I trusted those men and the other experts who made us beautiful. The rest of it I didn’t give a damn about. I didn’t fuss about my clothes, my lighting, or anything else, but, believe me, some of them did.”

TnT Tuesday

4a

TnT (Trapped In Time) Tuesday!  Featuring recent additions to my etsy shop, and a bit of info on the items.  Thought I’d try something new.

21t

This is a beautiful red silk-blend floral brocade bustier that is a relatively recent addition to the shop (I’m still swamped with custom orders right now, so new items are on the back burner right now).  It’s really quite beautiful in person.  I do have a bit of a weakness for brocades, especially when it’s an Asian print.

41t

Modeled by the gorgeous Nancyjane (http://www.modelmayhem.com/2403245) and photographed by yours truly.

15t

I have two of these currently in the shop.  One with a bust of 30-33 inches and a waist of 26-29 inches.  The other with a bust of 36-39 inches and a waist of 32-35 inches.  (you can find them here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/150539161/bustier-corset-red-bustier-brocade?ref=v1_other_2  and here:  http://www.etsy.com/listing/150539349/bustier-corset-red-bustier-brocade?ref=v1_other_1)

Fully lined in black cotton twill for durability.  I sew flexible boning into the lining of all my bustiers.  These are much more comfortable to wear than, say, a metal boned corset.  You can wear one of these lovelies all day and not feel like you’re going to cough up your spleen.

31t

They’re made to be worn as a shirt.  The look equally lovely alone or over a coordinating tank top (my favorite way to wear them).

36t

Bustiers were the first items I began sewing when I decided to open up an etsy shop.  There’s just something about them that I love.  They’re both vintage and modern, and can be made from just about anything.  (I love making these out of vintage band t-shirts, and one of my favorites that I EVER made was from my own vintage MAD magazine tshirt.  It was SO, SO cool)

Measuring

howtomeasure

As I get caught up on orders, I wanted to post an image of how/where to measure that I can easily reference for future customers.  Accurate measurements are so, so, SO important in my line of work.  I would, of course, prefer to be able to take measurements myself, but until I have unlimited funds and enjoy air travel, you’re on your own.

How fabulous is this vintage lady?

Mother Confessor

Wanted to share a couple of images by the amazingly talented Teresa Yeh Photography of my Kahlan, Mother Confessor gown.  I’m actually in the midst of creating two more of these right now for customers.  One is pretty much identical to that pictured, the other is altered a bit–detachable sleeves, and made in a raw cotton that is actually turning out quite lovely.

These were taken last year, and I just absolutely love them!

And definitely take a moment to check out Teresa Yeh Photography’s page–it’s SOO worth it!  Truly beautiful images–I hope to get the chance to work together in the future.  http://www.teresayeh.com/
